Thomas Sigwald was born in Vienna. As an adolescent he worked on several experimental movies and was awarded with prize money for two feature-length “Super 8” movies. He got his singing education by Althea Bridges, Illko Natchev and Ron Schneider.
He completed the actor’s training at the Max Reinhardtseminar, performed at the Salzburger Festspielen in “Jedermann” and played the main part (Friedl) in the Peter Patzak Movie “Die Försterbuben”. In 1988 he started his career in the musical field as Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar”, as Feuilly Enjolras in “Les Miserables” at the Vereinigten Bühnen Wien/Raimundtheater and Tony in “West Side Story” at Stadttheater Klagenfurt as well as at the Vereinigten Bühnen Graz.
Thomas Sigwald found his first engagement as a lyrical tenor a bit later in the Landestheater Linz, where he could acquire lots of skills by playing different roles like: Tamino/Die Zauberflöte, Belmonte/Entführung aus dem Serail, Don Ottavio/Don Giovanni, Fenton/Falstaff, Nadir/Les pêcheurs de perles, Werther/Werther, Rinuccio/Gianni Schicchi, Flamand/Capriccio, Baron Kronthal/Der Wildschütz. Alongside the opera, Thomas Sigwald has also dedicated himself very copiously to operetta. Today he is one of the few authentic performers of the difficult light genre and is always welcome at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, at the Landestheater Salzburg, Operettenmetropole Baden, at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, at the Semperoper Dresden and at the Volksoper Wien, where he was performing as: Alfred/Fledermaus, Graf Zedlau/Wiener Blut, Barinkay/Zigeunerbaron, Rosillion/Lustige Witwe, Zarewitsch, René/Graf von Luxemburg, Stanislaus/Der Vogelhändler as well as Edwin/Csárdásfürstin and Tassilo/Gräfin Mariza.
Apart from many concert tours, which took him to Australia to the Sidney Opera House and Melbourne Concert Hall, to Barcelona/Pallaun, to Tokio Santuri Hall and Chicago Symphonic Hall, Lincoln Center New York, Kennedy Center Washington, he also performed as Jaquino/Fidelio at the Bregenzer Festspiele.
In spring 2003, Thomas Sigwald made his debut in Innsbruck (director – Brigitte Fassbaender) as René in a production of “Graf von Luxemburg“.
At the same time, he successfully developed his own Personality evening called “Thomas Sigwald in concert”, which took place several times, with guests like Martina Serafin, Frauke Schäfer and Melanie Holliday.
He also made his debut as Petrucchio in the Robert Herzl production of “Kiss me Kate”.
His first CD “Liebesgeständnisse oft-selten-nie gehörte Meisterwerke der Operette” appeared in May 2003, recorded with the Czech symphony orchestra and the Slovak State orchestra. It was a world premiere, six never recorded arias of unknown operettas by Lehár, Dostal, Fall and Kálmán were recorded here for the first time. Besides, there are also well known hits like “Dein ist mein ganzes Herz”, “Grüß mir mein Wien” and “Ob blond ob braun” on this CD.
In April 2005 Thomas Sigwald tried the Danilo in “Die Lustige Witwe” together with Dr. Robert Herzl at the Opernhaus Halle, in May he made his debut at the Wiener Volksoper as Edwin in “Die Csardasfürstin” and performed ongoing at the Staatstheater Schwerin as Tamino/Zauberflöte and as Barinkay/Zigeunerbaron. In the following, a CD has been recorded for Frederic Loewe’s jubilee, by the SWR in Kaiserslautern under the direction of Caspar Richter who was the music-director of the Vereinigten Bühnen Wien. Since September 2006 Thomas Sigwald has been an ensemble member of the Wiener Volksoper and is starring in roles like “Eisenstein” (Fledermaus), “Pong” (Turandot), “Leonetto” (Boccaccio) Eselsmann (Die Kluge), “Brissard” (Graf von Luxemburg),”Edwin” (Csárdásfürstin) and “Orpeus” (Orpheus in der Unterwelt).
Since summer 2006 he has been producing and acting his new concert program “operettts”, which started its representation in 2007. He wrote this program together with Thomas Enzinger , who also directed it. Since 2008 “operettts” is part of the repertoire of the Volksoper Wien. In 2007 his first musical CD appeared. He is singing together with colleagues like Ute Gfrerer, Pavel Fieber, Wolfgang Pampel and Dagmar Hellberg, directed by Caspar Richter.
This CD, containing songs out of Brigadoon, Camelot, My Fair Lady and Gigi by Frederick Loewe, was produced and played by SWR Kaiserslautern.
In 2007 he made his debut as Orpheus in “Orpheus in der Unterwelt” at the Volksoper Wien in order to play the parts as Eisenstein and Leonetto at the “Volksopergastspiel” in Tokyo.
Furthermore, he celebrated a big success as “Gustl” in the premiere of “Das Land des Lächelns” at the Wiener Volksoper. In 2007 programs like “Ho Ho Ho”, which is about Santa Claus who has to adopt the marketing duties for the depressive Christ child, as well as „Wiener Schmankerln“ arose. Since 2007, the programs “Ho Ho Ho” and “operettts” can also be seen in Vienna. In addition to being a singer and producer, Thomas Sigwald has also been staging industrial movies and was the artistic supervisor of the event named “100Jahre Modul” in Vienna.
Since summer 2010 Thomas Sigwald became artistic director of the Culturel Residenz Zögernitz in Vienna, a special concerthall built in the period of the “Viennese Biedermeier”, where many premieres of the famous composer Johann Strauß took place. After many years this fantastic hall with one of the worlds best acoustics was renovated.
Thomas Sigwald presents operettas e.g. Auftrittslied von Edwin from “Die Cardasfürstin” and Grüß mir mein Wien from “Gräfin Mariza”, well known opera arias e.g. La donna e mobile from “Rigoletto” or Che gelida manina from “La Boehme” as well as musicals e.g. “Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha” and Musicalmelodien.
Together with Thomas Enzinger Thomas Sigwald wrote the operetta-concert-cabaret Operettts.
